Gervinho scored as Roma beat Chievo

Gervinho scored as Roma beat Chievo to take themselves to within 11 points of leaders Juventus.

The Ivorian's opener came from close range after he intercepted a horrendous weak header back by Bostjan Cesar, who had a loan spell at West Brom in 2007-08.

Mattia Destro doubled the lead late in the first half after slotting home following Rodrigo Taddei's through-ball.

Roma are now six points clear of third-placed Udinese in the race for the final automatic Champions League spot.

Bayern on brink of Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich can clinch the Bundesliga title on Tuesday with a record seven games to spare despite leaving it late to defeat Mainz.

The champions could have clinched the crown on Saturday had Schalke and Borussia Dortmund dropped points, but both sides won.

Instead, victory at Hertha Berlin will see them beat last season's record of winning with six games left.

Vidigal returns to management in Portugal with Belenenses

Former Angola international Lito Vidigal has returned to management in Portugal, continuing to break ground for African coaches on the European soccer scene.

The 44-year-old, who competed for Palancas Negras at the 1996 African Nations Cup finals and later coached the country at the same tournament in 2012, has taken over at Belenenses, who are haunted by relegation but have been promised by the former midfielder that he will work hard to keep the club in the top flight.

"We believe we can get out of this situation but the situation is not easy," he said on Friday as he took over.
"It will be important to work very hard to get out of the situation we are in. Of course it's difficult, but we all believe that we can overcome," he added, returning to the Lisbon-based club where he played between 1995 and 2002.

"I could not turn down the offer to come back and to work for the club where I graduated as a man and player," he said as second from bottom Belenenses prepared to travel to defending champions FC Porto on Sunday.

Lito Vidigal broke new ground for Africans by being appointed coach of Uniao Leiria in 2009, there by becoming the first African international to coach at a top flight club in Europe.

He later coached Angola and had a spell with AEL Limassol of Cyprus. His last job was in Libya at Al Ittihad.

Last season former Egypt international Hany Ramzy had a spell as coach of Lierse in Belgium. He took over in November 2012 at the club owned by Egyptian tycoon Maged Samy but stayed only six months.

Former Malawi coach Eddington Ng'onamo has been working in the lower leagues in Europe while Italian Lega Pro 1 side Reggiana have just appointed former Nigerian player Matthew Olorunleke as their head coach.

There have been several African-born coaches of major European national teams and clubs, mainly from the colonial era, like Morocco-born Just Fontaine in charge of France and the Mozambican-born Juca, Mario Wilson and Carlos Queiroz in charge of Portugal.

Toure scores hat-trick in big Man City victory

Yaya Toure scored a hat-trick as Manchester City responded to Chelsea's thrashing of Arsenal with a resounding win over 10-man Fulham.

With Chelsea taking a temporary nine-point lead over City after thumping the Gunners 6-0 earlier on Saturday, it was imperative that Manuel Pellegrini's side kept pace with Jose Mourinho's league leaders.

And they were inspired by their talismanic Ivorian midfielder, who scored twice from the penalty spot and hit a stunning third from 25 yards to take his season's total to 20 goals before Fernandinho and Martin Demichelis turned it into a rout late on.

Manager David Moyes says Man Utd relishing Manchester derby

David Moyes says Manchester United are heading into Tuesday's derby with Manchester City at Old Trafford full of confidence after back-to-back wins.

United, out of the title race after a poor domestic season, followed up their Champions League victory over Olympiakos with a 2-0 win at West Ham.

City, who will move three points behind leaders Chelsea with a win, beat United 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium in September.

"We'll go into our next game confident and ready to get a result," said Moyes.

Jose Mourinho: Chelsea boss revels in 'easy' Arsenal win

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho described his team's thumping 6-0 victory over Arsenal as "easy and comfortable".

The Blues were 2-0 up within seven minutes thanks to Samuel Eto'o and Andre Schurrle strikes and went on to record their biggest win over Arsenal.

"We came to kill and in 10 minutes we destroyed [them]," said Mourinho of his Premier League leaders.

"Ten amazing minutes, no doubt this game was our game. My analysis of the game is about the 10 minutes."

It was Mourinho's biggest Premier League victory as Chelsea manager and a result that ruined Arsene
Wenger's 1,000th match as Arsenal manager.

Mourinho's Chelsea beat Wenger in his 500th game in charge of the Gunners in 2005 and the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss extended his unbeaten streak against the Frenchman to 11 games.

Referee Andre Marriner apology for Kieran Gibbs red card error

Referee Andre Marriner has apologised for sending off Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs by mistake during the Gunners' 6-0 defeat by league leaders Chelsea.

A penalty was awarded after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain tipped Eden Hazard's shot around a post with his hand but Gibbs was shown the red card.

Oxlade-Chamberlain seemed to tell Marriner that he was the culprit but the original decision stood.
A statement read that Marriner was "disappointed" to have made the error.

Referees' body the Professional Game Match Officials Limited said in the statement: "Incidents of mistaken identity are very rare and are often the result of a number of different technical factors.

"Whilst this was a difficult decision Andre is disappointed that he failed to identify the correct player.

"He expressed his disappointment to Arsenal when he was made aware of the issue."

Chelsea 2 - 0 Galatasaray

Chelsea became the first English side to reach the Champions League last eight after beating a limp Galatasaray.

Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg, former Blues striker Didier Drogba could not inspire the Turkish team, who fell behind early on when Samuel Eto'o fired past Fernando Muslera.

Gary Cahill made it 3-1 on aggregate when he thumped home after John Terry's header was saved.

Galatasaray's night was summed up by Drogba's stoppage-time miss.

Real Madrid 3 - 1 FC Schalke 04

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid reached the Champions League last eight with a 9-2 aggregate win over German side Schalke.

The forward opened the scoring in the 21st minute when he converted Gareth Bale's square ball from close range.

Schalke levelled when Tim Hoogland's low shot took a big deflection to beat keeper Iker Casillas.

Ronaldo scored his 41st this season with a low shot before Alvaro Morata tapped in the Spanish club's third.

World Cup 2014: No contact from Nigeria - Anichebe

Nigeria striker Victor Anichebe insists he has not been asked to return to the national side for the World Cup.

The 25-year-old recently put his international career on hold to "manage his body" and to focus on his club.
Super Eagles media officer Ben Alaiya revealed coach Stephen Keshi is hoping to persuade the West Brom forward to change his mind.

But Anichebe told BBC Sport: "I haven't spoken to anybody, that goes from the federation to Stephen Keshi himself."

However, he has not ruled out a return to the fold - and he realises the tournament in Brazil may be his last chance to play at the biggest event in football.

"We will see what happens," said Anichebe, who missed out on selection for South Africa 2010. "Right now I'm playing well, feeling fit, strong and helping my team in the situation we are currently in at the moment.

"If I continue to play well from now to the end of the season then we can take it from there.

"I'm grateful that the coach says he is willing to give me a chance, but I think everybody in Nigeria and around the world knows what I can do and capable of.

"The Premier League is watched around the world so it's easy to see what qualities I can bring to the team.

"If not, there are so many other talented Nigerians around the world that would also love the opportunity to represent their country and play in such a prestigious tournament.

"Yes the World Cup only comes once in every four years and it could be my last opportunity - this is something I'm aware of but I haven't spoken to anybody."

A former England youth international, Anichebe switched allegiance and played his first game for Nigeria in March 2008.

Daniel Sturridge & Sam Allardyce win player and manager of month

Liverpool'sDaniel Sturridge has won the Barclays Player of the Month award for the second time this season.

The England striker, 24, who also won the August award, was rewarded for five goals and two assists in February.

Sam Allardyce, 59, received the manager's award after West Ham gained a maximum 12 points during the month.

The London club achieved four straight wins against Swansea City, Aston Villa, Norwich City and Southampton to climb into 10th place in the Premier League.

Sturridge's performances helped Liverpool, second in the table, to three wins from four, including the 5-1 Anfield success over Arsenal.

It is the fifth time Allardyce has been chosen as Barclays Manager of the Month, the last was in 2006 when he was in charge at Bolton Wanderers.

Makinwa asks for help from Fifa in China contract dispute

Nigeria striker Ayodele Makinwa has asked Fifa for help in his fight for compensation from China League One club Beijing Baxy.

The 30-year-old has asked football's world governing body to intervene in his dispute with Baxy after the club terminated his contract, just one year into a two-year deal.

He says he has yet to receive an official statement from the club for the early termination of his contract and has decided to take his case to Fifa via his legal team.

"The club president told me during our pre-season that the arrival of new sponsors and partners has led to a decision to sign new foreign players," Makinwa told BBC Sport.

"There was nothing official, no option of a mutual termination or an indication of what to expect from our conversation.

"So when it was time to return [after pre-season in Kunming, southwest China], Baxy failed to provide me with the necessary documents for my re-entry visa.

"They refused to respond to my warnings and after they shut the door of communication I filed a complaint to Fifa seeking redress for wrongful termination of my contract."

The former Lazio striker who scored four goals in 11 matches for the Chinese side aims to prove Baxy were wrong to terminate his contract, and also seek outstanding salary, bonuses, ticket refund and compensation with interest.

"We have already written to Fifa showing proof that they were wrong and failed to respect the terms and conditions of my contract," he said.

"They are still owing me salary, ticket refund, bonuses and I have also asked for compensation with interest.

"If everything was done right, I could have joined another team earlier but they've made life difficult hence my decision to go to Fifa."

According to China-based Peter Davis, a writer for Wild East Football, contract disputes are becoming prevalent in Chinese football.

"There is a similar situation with Australia's Joel Griffiths at relegated Qingdao Jonoon. He had every intention to stay on but was released with time still remaining on his contract.

Davis added: "Griffiths like Makinwa got Fifa involved to resolve it and with several Chinese players there have been stories along the same lines.

"Contracts are a difficult thing here, often not treated with the same seriousness as in the west so it will take high profile stories to ensure future players don't have to go through this.

"Beijing Baxy are a fairly wealthy club, backed actually by an ice cream company and there are growing rumours that the mega rich Wanda group may invest in the club.

"Makinwa did well at Baxy for a short time, unfortunately shorter stays in China are becoming commonplace and turnover of players is picking up and performance in the case of some players may not be relevant."

Makinwa has 18 caps and two goals for Nigeria since making his debut in 2004.

He played for the Super Eagles at the 2006 and 2008 African Cup of Nations in Egypt and Ghana respectively.

Uli Hoeness resigns as Bayern Munich president after court case

Uli Hoeness has resigned as Bayern Munich president and chairman in the wake of his conviction for tax evasion.

The 62-year-old, who played for Bayern from 1970-1979 before retiring through injury aged 27, will not appeal against a three-and-a-half year jail sentence.

"Tax evasion was the biggest mistake of my life," he said in a statement. "Bayern Munich is my life's work and will also remain so."

Hoeness was found guilty of evading taxes worth £22.5m (27m euros).

Bayern have appointed Adidas chief executive Herbert Hainer as the club's new chairman.

Senegal's Mame Biram Diouf ruled out for rest of season

Senegal international striker Mame Biram Diouf will miss the rest of the season following shoulder surgery.

Diouf was injured while playing for Hannover against Bayer Leverkusen last week and had an operation on Friday.

It means the 26-year-old may have played his last game for the German club having declined to sign an extension to his contract which expires at the end of the current campaign.

Diouf has hit 30 goals in 68 games for Hannover since signing in January 2012.

He was linked with a move to Cardiff City in January this year.

Had he joined the English Premier League side he would have been reunited with boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who he played with in Manchester United's reserves.

West Brom sack Nicolas Anelka for 'gross misconduct'

West Brom are sacking Nicolas Anelka for gross misconduct after the striker announced he was quitting the club.

Anelka wrote on social media he was leaving with "immediate effect" after failing to reconcile differences with Albion over his 'quenelle' gesture.

The Frenchman, 35, was banned for five games and fined £80,000 by the Football Association for making the sign after scoring against West Ham in December.

The club is sacking him for his conduct that day and his social media outburst.

They have given him 14 days' notice of the termination of his contract.

He had been suspended by Albion while the club carried out its own internal investigation.

Earlier on Friday, Anelka used social media to announce he was leaving the club immediately.

He wrote: "Following discussions between the club and myself, certain conditions have been set for me to rejoin the group, which I can't accept.

"In order to preserve my integrity, I've terminated my contract with West Brom with immediate effect."

However, West Brom responded by releasing a statement saying "the termination was invalid as it was not conducted under the correct legal process".

The statement also detailed the conditions Anelka needed to meet to enable his club suspension to be lifted.

It read: "The club required Nicolas Anelka to apologise to it, its supporters, sponsors and the wider community for the impact and consequences of his gesture made on December 28 and secondly, that he accept a substantial fine.

"The club considers the conduct of Nicolas Anelka on December 28, coupled with his purported termination on social media, to be gross misconduct."

The striker, whose 12-month deal runs out at the end of the season, would only have been eligible to play in Albion's final five Premier League games due to his ban.

He was given the punishment by the Football Association's independent regulatory commission for making the controversial gesture, described as an "inverted Nazi salute".

He denied his use of the sign was intended to be anti-Semitic, and the commission reported it did not find he was "an anti-Semite".

However, Anelka claims he made the gesture in support of his friend Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, a French comedian who has been convicted seven times of anti-Semitic crimes.

The FA had initially wanted a tougher punishment for the player but opted not to appeal against the decision.

Anelka, who also did not appeal against the ruling, is due to begin his five-game suspension in Saturday's Premier League game at Swansea

Nicolas Anelka and FA decide not to appeal over five-game ban

West Brom's Nicolas Anelka will serve his five-match ban after the Football Association and the striker both decided not to contest the decision.

The Frenchman, 34, had seven days to appeal but that time has now lapsed.
The FA had wanted a heavier sanction than an independent commission gave Anelka for his 'quenelle' gesture.

However, it said in a statement on Thursday: "We do not consider there is a real prospect of successfully appealing to extend the sanction."

The Frenchman made the sign, which was described as "an aggravated breach" of FA rules by the commission, during a 3-3 Premier League draw with West Ham on 28 December.

Anelka and his legal team had defended his actions to the FA's independent regulatory commission hearing, saying the controversial gesture was in support of his friend, the French comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala.

The commission's three-member panel, headed by a QC, said in its ruling that both charges against Anelka had been proven - that the gesture was abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper, and that it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion or belief.

However, the panel added it did not believe Anelka had been deliberately anti-Semitic.

Robin van Persie says David Moyes is right man for Manchester United

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie says he wants wants to extend his contract at Old Trafford.
The 30-year-old has been dogged by claims he does not get on with manager David Moyes and it has even been suggested he may leave in the summer.

Robin van Persie insists he is content at United.

"The truth is I'm very happy here," he said. "I signed for four years and I'd be delighted to stay longer, beyond the next two years I have on my contract."

It has also been suggested that Van Persie has not been impressed by Moyes' training methods.
However, speaking in an interview conducted for the match programme, United Review , ahead of Sunday's encounter with old rivals Liverpool, he spoke in glowing terms about the manager's methods.

"There is no doubt I'm learning new things and progressing with David Moyes," he said. "The sessions we have on the training ground are fantastic and I'm learning a lot from them every day.

"There is mutual respect between us and the work environment is actually good. He really wants things to work and I want the same."

Van Persie has admitted the huge amount of debate about his future is partly down to his limited public statements.

Newcastle United boss banned for seven games

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has been handed a seven-game ban for his headbutt on Hull's David Meyler, a Premier League record for a manager.

Pardew clashed with the Republic of Ireland midfielder in the 72nd minute of his side's 4-1 win on 1 March.

An independent Football Association commission ruled the first three matches imposed are a stadium ban with the remaining four a touchline ban.

Pardew, 52, was also fined £60,000 and warned as to his future conduct.  It is the first stadium ban for a Premier League manager.

Atletico Madrid beat AC Milan to reach the quarter-finals

Diego Costa kept up a record of scoring in every Champions League game he has played this season as Atletico Madrid beat AC Milan to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1997.

The striker, who scored the only goal of the first leg, volleyed in Koke's cross after two minutes.
Kaka's header pulled one back but Arda Turan scored with a deflected effort.

Raul Garcia headed in a third before Costa found the bottom corner from 10 yards with five minutes left.Costa, who recently made his Spain debut, has hit seven goals in five Champions League appearances this season, and has scored 29 times in all competitions.

Arsenal out of the Champions League after draw in Munich

Arsenal exited the Champions League at the first knockout stage for the fourth year in a row after drawing at holders Bayern Munich.

A dominant Bayern, leading 2-0 from the first leg, had a Javi Martinez volley ruled out for offside before the break.

Bastian Schweinsteiger gave Bayern the lead from close range before Lukas Podolski shot high into the net to level the score on the night.

Thomas Muller had a late penalty saved as Bayern won 3-1 on aggregate.

Lack of black managers in English football a Sad Indictment

Former England defender Sol Campbell says the lack of black managers in English football is "a sad indictment" of the game.

The sacking of Chris Powell as Charlton Athletic manager today, Tuesday 11th March 2014 means that Norwich City's Chris Hughton is the only black manager in charge at one of the Football League's 92 clubs.

The ex-Spurs, Arsenal and Portsmouth centre-back believes clubs, and "the hierarchy", should do more to promote black candidates to managerial roles.

Super Eagles gets $10k win bonus

Nigeria have reverted to the bonus structure of $10 000 per player for a win as the NFF seek to motivate the players to perform at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

According to figures from the NFF's budget defence at the House of Representatives on Monday, the new, graduated World Cup structure will see each player earn $10 000 for a win in their group games, $12 000 for a round of 16 win and $15 000 for a quarter-final win.

For the semi-final each player will get $20 000 for a win and if they go all the way to make history and win the World Cup, the NFF have budgeted $30 000 per player.

Their daily camp allowance has also been jacked up from $100 per day to $200 per day.

The entire World Cup budget, according to NFF sources, comes to N2 billion.

Charlton sack Chris Powell

Charlton have confirmed the sacking of manager Chris Powell - less than a week after he agreed terms on a new contract.

New owner Roland Duchatelet axed the popular 44-year-old former Addicks left-back following Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final defeat at Sheffield United, and with the club lying bottom of the Sky Bet Championship.

Duchatelet, who took over at The Valley in January, is reportedly set to appoint Jose Riga, a former coach at Standard Liege - another club owned by the Belgian businessman - as Powell's replacement

Powell, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the season, revealed last Thursday he had agreed financial terms on a new deal but was awaiting further assurances from the new owner.

Duchatelet said: "We have been working with Chris Powell and his representatives for a couple of weeks to try to agree a contract extension which would have seen us continue to work together.

"There was good progress, but we could not reach an agreement over the club's football strategy going forward

"The situation put a strain on the working relationship between Chris and the board. Therefore I think it is best for all parties that we part ways at this stage.

"I would like to thank Chris for his commitment and hard work over the past three years. The club enjoyed a number of good times under his leadership.

"However, given the club's position in the league and the number of important fixtures upcoming, I felt this difficult decision was unavoidable at this time.

"We will look to quickly appoint a replacement who we feel will give us the best chance of avoiding relegation from the Championship.

"I can assure supporters this was not an easy decision, but it has been made with the club's future in mind. Time will tell if it is the right decision."

Nigeria Super Eagles stars set to receive $1m bonus for Nations Cup win

Africa's wealthiest businessman Aliko Dangote is set to fulfil his promise to reward Nigeria's team with $1m for winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

After a public appeal by Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama, it seems Dangote is about to come good.

"We've been waiting for Nigerian officials to collect the money but nobody has written to us. He said

"We will write to them, asking for the account numbers of the players, then we'll make the transfer immediately."

Dangote, who is group president and chief executive officer of the Dangote Group, is reputed to be Africa's richest man.

Earlier this month he became the first African to be listed in the top 25 of Forbes magazine's annual ranking of global billionaires, with a net worth of $25bn.

Samuel Eto'o Celebrates Chelsea Win

Chelsea moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League after sinking Tottenham with four second-half goals.

There was little in the game until Jan Vertonghen's error let Samuel Eto'o in to fire the Blues ahead.
Younes Kaboul was sent off for fouling Eto'o soon afterwards, and Eden Hazard slotted home the resulting penalty.

Demba Ba made it 3-0 late on following a slip by Sandro, then completed the scoring when he latched on to Kyle Walker's disastrous back-header.

Please what do you think of Samuel Eto'o celebration?

Leon Balogun No longer Need Surgery

Nigeria international defender Leon Balogun will no longer require surgery to treat his injured ankle.

Leon Balogun was due to undergo surgery on his injured right foot but was lucky after the second examination by medics in Germany , it was discovered that his injury was not that serious as it was first feared to be.

"They told me that the two bones broken are in the base of my foot, which will heal on their own and will not require me to undergo any surgical operation,"  Balogun said

"I was also told that within six weeks I should be in good condition and another two or four weeks for rehabilitation. Overall I should be back kicking the ball by the time the national team returns to camp."
Balogun further disclosed that Nigerian football officials as well as Super Eagles medics have been in constant touch, keeping tabs on developments concerning his injury.

West Brom 0 Man Utd 3

Manchester United kept their slim hopes of a top four league place alive as they beat struggling West Brom.

A Rafael header was tipped on to the crossbar before United took the lead when Phil Jones powered in a header.

The Baggies exerted some pressure in search of an equaliser and striker Victor Anichebe angled a shot wide.

However, United secured the win when Wayne Rooney headed in from close range and Danny Welbeck provided a cool finish to a well-worked move.
